The popular television sitcom, “Modern Family”, has had its share of great card commercial spots. However, one commercial campaign in particular has consistently ranked in the top ten. The long-running sitcom featured a commercial for the Discover card collection, which was earning rave reviews by the time that the second season was on the air. For those of you who never tuned in to the show, here is a quick recap.
The modern family sitcom, “Modern Family”, featured several different characters and was one of the most successful shows on television during its second season. Throughout the seasons, the characters felt like they needed a new find card collection to help remedy their woes, but failed to actually go out and buy one. Instead, they instead bought several different cards from a local store. This led to an incredibly clever campaign, in which the characters went on the famous “doppelganger” walk in order to trick their mother into helping them buy a new card collection.
One of the best things about “Modern Family” was the wonderful acting ensemble. The entire cast was excellent at playing the characters they were portraying. Eric Stoltz was always funny, while Elijah Wood played the father and Noah Parker played the son. Each actor made it seem like they were simply playing a different character, but when they came together in a doored car in order to reach their destination, they seemed to literally do anything together. In one episode, Noah Parker played a man in a white suit who was driving around when he was asked by his clerk to do a special investigation on some strange packages that had been left at various post offices.
Once the clerk noticed the unusual stains on one of the packages, he asked Parker to take a look. When Parker inspected the packages, he found that they were actually fake identification cards! This would be a reference to the “Doose discovery” that occurred years ago in an episode of “The Facts About Kids and Cards.” The clerk was about to call the police when suddenly a doorman showed up and explained that the cards were authentic, and that the mother and son were actually using them to steal money from the bank.
When the police showed up, Parker jumped out of the car with his mother, explaining that he was doing a bit of research on how the system worked. He explained that he and his mother were going to get away on vacation for the weekend, but that he would need her help to discover the code. As it turned out, his mother knew all the alphabet letters, and she was able to help him find the mystery person who was behind the whole operation.
This was a very clever ad campaign. It showed how easy it could be to combine science fiction and family drama in a clever way. The commercial proved to be a huge hit, making it one of the most popular series of the late seventies. “I could have stayed home, I've got better things to do,” said Parker.
